Research Assistantship

Fixed amount of money for conducting research on a specific project under the supervision of a particular professor

Typically accompanies tuition waiver, thus adequate for survival

Typically does not accompany tuition waiver, thus adequate for survival but can be augmented with ad hoc employment in teaching support

Teaching Assistantship

Fixed amount of money for supporting teaching activities, as in tutoring, grading home work and supervising laboratories

Typically accompanies tuition waiver, thus adequate for survival

Does not typically exist in Canada. Teaching support activities are ad hoc employment opportunities.

Ad Hoc Employment

Hourly-wage jobs.

Skilled: tutoring, grading home work and supervising laboratories

Menial: such as a receptionist, re-shelving books in a library

Those on research or teaching assistantship can not take up such jobs. All others are eligible, for up to 20 hours per week.

Students with or without research assistantship can take up only skilled jobs.

 

Most important criteria for financial assistance award:

  • Academic performance (grades)
  • Performance on the entrance exam

Applying for financial assistance: At the time of applying for admission, in the same application form.
