The system of education in America and Canada is quite flexible. You are expected to make your own course selections and manage your own schedule. Academic advisors are available to help you do this.

Your performance on various evaluation elements in a given course - as set by your own professor for each course - are the basis for assessing your performance. You would be well advised to follow carefully the classroom instructions by your professors. Achieving good grades is easier because your performance is assessed throughout the course, and not just at the very end on the final exam.
