Dear Mentor:

Where can I find more money for college in the UK?

I got a partial scholarship from the University of Northumbia at Newcastle which will reduce the course fees while flight I have to find myself the rest of the course fees, accommodation, living cost and the cost of. It is really hard for me to find funds or sponsorship here (in Indonesia). I really hope you can help me to solve my problem. I look forward to having your response as soon as possible. Thank you for your kind attention.

Short on Money, Indonesia

Dear Short on Money:

How we wish we had a great solution for you! Your situation is not all that uncommon. As you know, getting partial assistance is certainly more difficult than just getting admission, but it is much easier than getting full assistance. In this situation, you have limited choices: you can contact the school to plead your case again and hope they would increase the partial assistance, and/or finance the shortfall through personal means, and/or hope that you can engage in a part-time employment that would offset the shortfall. You should, however, recognize that you are required to demonstrate your financial soundness to the UK immigration authorities before a student visa is issued to you. Unfortunately, there are no magic formulas to overcome financial challenges.

As you may know, you would be legally allowed, with certain restrictions, to gain part-time employment in the UK. You may wish to visit the iMahal Section on the Immigration/Visa Requirements for UK for further information. Although you are allowed to work for up to 20 hours a week, you may or may not be able to undertake such employment depending on the rigor and demands of your school workload. Whether this employment would be sufficient to offset the shortfall is something you would have to determine yourself.
