| How do I go from lawyer in India to MBA in the US? |
I am an Indian citizen. I am 32 years of age and married. I completed my B.Sc. degree in 1990 with 61.1% marks. Then I completed the Law degree in 1993 with 54%of marks. In the mean time (simultaneously), I studied post-graduate diploma in marketing and sales from another institution (54%marks). My medium of instruction was in English in these levels. I am still practicing in the local courts (high courts to lower courts). My legal career started in 1993 (eight years of experience in legal field). Now it is very difficult to maintain the same tempo and there are hundreds of lawyers wandering here and they are without any work. It is not the survival of the fittest that matters but it the capacity of a lawyer to canvas cases from the clients to "survives" nowadays, which is against the fundamental principle of our legal system. In the present circumstances, I do not want to waste time. I have applied for the TOEFL [Test of English as a Foreign Language] exam, which is scheduled for December 5, 2001. My aim is to do an MBA from an accredited University. Even though there are lot many universities in India which offers MBA, they not up to the international standards and we may not get any international exposure.
Things being like this, I would like to do the MBA in your university if my above qualifications are okay. Do you think that doing an MBA in your institution will change my present condition? I am ready to spent money and ready to work hard. I am financially sound too. Please send me your advise in this matter. If your university is not in a position to accommodate me, please send me names of other universities which will help me. Tell me when are your courses are commencing.

We must note that the cost of education in the US is extremely high, ranging from $15,000 to $45,000 annually, Unless you are very wealthy, you will find it extremely difficult to pursue an MBA in the US. Virtually no financial aid is available to international students for an MBA in the US.
Although you fulfill the academic requirements for admission, you would also be required to take the GMAT (Graduate Management Aptitude Test), a standardized entrance exam. Even if you perform extra-ordinarily well on the GMAT, your academic performance fails to make a compelling case for your admission. You can, at best, hope to gain admission in a mediocre MBA program in the US. Top MBA schools attract the highest caliber candidates from around the world and thus are extremely competitive.
The admission process starts in the fall (September - October timeframe) and continues through till the spring (March - April timeframe), for the academic session starting in the following fall (August - September timeframe).
